I was introduced to the reformer by my trainer, Shaakira, as an additional form of training. I cycle, have done many years of weight/resistance training. Shaakira opened a new vista for me with functional training, flow yoga sessions and the reformer sessions. The reformer accommodates a full range of motion, which has improved my flexibility, whilst building strength. I enjoy intense workouts, and the reformer rises to the occasion. It works one properly without the negative effects of strain. That’s a big win, and essential to keep in consideration as one gets older. One wants to stay in great shape without the negatives of wear and tear. It oxygenates the body and releases tension, so very good – psychologically too. It has a very good cardiovascular effect – I love jumping on the trampoline – feels like I am flying! The pushing and pulling with my arms and legs against the resistance of the springs, carriage and body weight makes this a totally unique strengthening building routine. One feels graceful and splendid when doing the exercises that Shaakira demonstrates. I love the rhythm and flow of the sessions. My muscles have become more toned and elongated through the sessions. As a lover of fast and sweaty cardio, Pilates was never my thing. In fact, I found Pilates hatefully boring. That as until I met Shaakira, who introduced me to the Pilates a’la the Reformer, which I call the “transformer”. Now I am hooked, not because of the reformer – rather because of Shaakira’s ability to make the reformer work for you. Shaakira is the consummate professional, she is passionate about what she does, and this passion is injected into her sessions with her clients. Her knowledge of anatomy, movement, the reformer and her clients are unparalleled. She understands, cares and thinks about what I want and need and then tailors her training to suit me, what I need and even how I feel on the day. One never gets the feeling that Shaakira is adopting a “one size fits all” approach to training on the reformer. As a male triathlete, I was looking at including a component to my training that would help me improve my performance, but at the same time stay injury free. My physiotherapist recommended reformer Pilates. The results have been amazing. My core is so much stronger and as a result, I am feeling much more stable on my bike. My knees aren’t sore like they used to be after my long runs and my overall mobility is so much better. Reformer Pilates is a game changer.

Reformer Pilates is exactly what I have needed for years, I just didn’t know it until recently. Since doing one-on-one reformer sessions with Shaakira, I have noticed a marked improvement in my core, overall strength and posture which has complimented my functional and flow training.
